New study confirms the benefits of olive oil polyphenols on skin aging

Skin aging is a natural process that is attracting increasing interest from both researchers and consumers seeking effective and natural solutions. A recent study has highlighted the impact of polyphenols derived from extra virgin olive oil on wrinkle reduction and skin health improvement, offering promising prospects in the fight against skin aging.

Extra Virgin Olive Oil: A Skin Treasure Thanks to Polyphenols

Extra virgin olive oil is much more than a simple ingredient of Mediterranean cuisine. Enriched with bioactive compounds such as polyphenols, oleocanthal, and oleacein, this oil stands out for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. These natural substances play a key role in preventing skin aging by fighting against free radicals responsible for the oxidation of skin cells. Numerous studies have already proven the beneficial effects of extra virgin olive oil on general health, particularly for the cardiovascular system and inflammation management. But a more recent study, conducted by a team of Italian researchers, explored the effectiveness of oleocanthal and oleacein in reducing wrinkles and improving skin texture.

A Promising Clinical Study

The study, conducted by researchers at the University of Rome “La Sapienza”, involved 70 participants, both men and women aged between 20 and 79. For 30 days, participants applied a serum containing 1% oleocanthal and oleacein, extracted from olive oil, twice a day. Using the VISIA analysis system, the researchers observed a significant reduction in wrinkles among the participants.

The results are striking: women aged 45 to 79 saw an average decrease in wrinkles of 33.91%, while men in the same age group experienced a reduction of 46.56%. Even younger men (20–44 years) showed a notable improvement of 51.93%. These results confirm the effectiveness of polyphenols derived from olive oil in combating visible signs of aging. By combining these polyphenols in cosmetic formulations, extra virgin olive oil becomes a powerful ally in anti-aging care, offering a natural alternative to more conventional treatments.

How Do These Polyphenols Act on the Skin?

The polyphenols in olive oil, such as oleocanthal and oleacein, are known for their ability to penetrate the upper layers of the skin and interact with skin cells. These natural compounds have strong anti-inflammatory properties that help reduce inflammation related to skin aging and stimulate collagen production, a protein essential for skin firmness and elasticity.

Moreover, polyphenols help strengthen the skin barrier by improving hydration and dermal structure, making the skin more resistant to external aggressors like UV rays and pollution. This process slows the appearance of wrinkles and promotes smoother, younger-looking skin. This combined action positions olive oil and its polyphenolic extracts as a leading natural solution in the field of anti-aging skincare, with visible, safe, and lasting results.

Using these polyphenols in skincare products also responds to a growing demand for beauty solutions that are both effective and environmentally friendly. In a context where more and more consumers are looking for skincare products based on natural ingredients without side effects, extra virgin olive oil offers a perfect answer.

Conclusion: Olive Oil, a First-Choice Ally for Healthy Skin and Fighting Skin Aging

The results of this study confirm what many suspected: the polyphenols found in olive oil, particularly oleocanthal and oleacein, are powerful allies in the fight against signs of skin aging. While the results are especially significant in older adults, young adults can also benefit from these protective properties to prevent the appearance of wrinkles and maintain healthy skin.

Thus, extra virgin olive oil, thanks to its polyphenolic extracts, becomes a skincare essential, offering a natural and effective alternative to traditional anti-aging treatments. For consumers looking for natural and sustainable solutions, it is an effective way to maintain healthy, firm, and youthful skin while enjoying the benefits of an ancestral ingredient.
